An Introduction to Biorobotics

Biorobotics is a branch of Genetic Engineering. It is closely associated with the fields of Cybernectics and Bionics. Its aim is to develop robots which function similar to living organisms. The goal is to unite the fast processing speed of information by the robots with the interpretation ability of the humans into a single organism. This branch of knowledge is in its infancy. This article tries to gain further insight.

Biorobotics

To build robots close to humans in many aspects, knowledge in Cybernectics and Bionics is imperative.Cybernectics is a multi-disciplinary field. It involves dealing with systems, their calculated interactions with the immediate environment, expected or predictable influence of the environment on the system and ultimately the appropriate response of the system to these influences.

Bionics is a discipline which brings in to use the technology of the living organisms in the nature. It is based on the belief that the plant and the animal kingdom evolve and get adopted to new ways of existence with evolution and time. Both these basic fields of Biorobotics bring in to use concepts and principles of disciplines as different as Electronics,Computer Science,Biology, psychology (neuropsychology, behavioral psychology, cognitive psychology),sociology, philosophy and architecture.

It is a highly specialized field requiring expertise and cooperation in a large scale. The possibilities of the benefits that can be reaped from the advances in this field are endless. However, there are many social and ethical issues to be resolved before further advances are made in the research of this field.

Otoplasty – Adult Otoplasty Before & After

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery, which changes the appearance of person’s external ears. Otoplasty can do many tasks; it can bring the ears closer to head, reduce the size of very large ears or reshape the various bends in the cartilage.

The surgery of Otoplasty can involve a combination of moving, reshaping, adding or removing structural ear elements.

Adult Otoplasty:
Adults may also benefit from this procedure as it can helps in improving self-esteem. Often adults prefer to go for other facial plastic surgeries along with this in conjunction. This is more popular among adults because it not only pin back the ears but also reshapes them, reduce them in size and give them a symmetrical shape.

Adults should consult their surgeons before going for such a surgery. It is because in an adult the cartilage of fully developed ear does not provide an excellent molding as it provides in children. Timing of the surgery is always a consideration because at young age the cartilage is extremely pliable, so, there is a greater scope of shaping; moreover, child has more psychological benefits from cosmetic improvements.

After Effects Of Otoplasty On Adult:
Some of the after effects of Otoplasty are mentioned below:

  • Soft dressings applied to the ears will remain for few days.
  • Mild discomfort can be experienced.
  • If you are accustomed to sleep on your side, then you will have to change your sleeping patterns as you can not give pressure to your ears.
  • Hair bands are suggested for two weeks or so. This will keep the ears in desired position.
  • There will be a thin white scar behind the ear after healing. Since it is behind the ear its visibility is negligible.

Types of Vegetarians – What They Eat and What They Dont

Many people are becoming vegetarians these days, either on compassionate grounds or to improve their health. There are different types of vegetarians, based on what they eat and what they don’t.

It is generally agreed upon that vegetarian food consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, leaves etc(any edible thing that comes from plants), milk, milk products, honey and eggs.

Some people disagree about including milk products, eggs and honey in the vegetarian diet.

Here are the different types of vegetarians

Vegan: A vegan is a person who eats only plant based foods. Meat of any animal is not consumed. In addition, vegans also do not eat dairy products and eggs. Vegans also do not eat processed foods which may contain animal derivatives in the end product. Many vegans do not even consume honey, as it is produced by bees.

Lacto-ovo-vegetarians: People who do not eat meat, but eat dairy products and eggs, along with fruits, vegetables and other plant based products are called lacto-ovo-vegetarians. Lacto in Latin refers to milk products and ovo refers to eggs.

Lacto vegetarians are people who eat plant foods and milk products but do not eat meat and eggs.
Ovo vegetarians are people who eat plant foods and eggs but do not eat meat and milk products.

Pescetarians: Pescetarians are people who do not eat meat of any animals except fish and other seafood. This is because they believe fish are beneficial for health. Vegetarians do not consider pescetarians to be real vegetarians. Most pescetarians use pescetarianism as a transition towards becoming vegans.

Flexitarians: Flexitarians are people whose diet mainly consists of vegetarian food, but they eat meat occasionally.

Raw vegans:Raw vegans eat vegetarian food that is not heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit or 46 degrees Celsius. They believe that food cooked above this temperature loses its nutrients and is harmful to the body.

Health Effects of Caffeine

Caffeine is a stimulant of the nervous system. It ‘wakes us up’ and makes us more active, at least temporarily. The health effects of caffeine are far more than we know about.

Caffeine affects our body both positively and negatively.

Positive health effects of caffeine

  • Caffeine helps you keep active in the day. It can drive away laziness and helps you concentrate on work.
  • Caffeine helps you improve your mood. Caffeine has been associated with increased release of dopamine, which is the hormone responsible for feeling pleasure.
  • Caffeine has been also found to improve physical endurance. It helps you do physical work with more intensity and for a longer time.
  • Caffeine is also a mild analgesic. It helps relieve pain. It is especially effective in relieving headache.
  • People who take caffeine have been found to have less risk of getting Parkinson’s disease than people who do not take caffeine.

Negative health effects of caffeine

  • Taking caffeine seems to decrease bone density by taking out calcium from bones. This increases the risk of osteoporosis, especially in women.
  • Immediately after taking caffeine, the blood sugar level increases quite sharply. After some time, it falls sharply. These fluctuations in blood sugar will be difficult to handle for diabetics.
  • Caffeine is addictive. If you are a regular caffeine user and stop caffeine, you are likely to experience withdrawal symptoms.
  • Taking caffeine after 2 p.m may affect your sleep pattern.
  • Caffeine has also been associated with infertility and miscarriage.
  • Over dose of caffeine will result in nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, depression and other similar conditions.

Effects of caffeine that increase blood pressure

Caffeine also has an effect on blood pressure. Drinking two to three cups of coffee will result in an increase of 3 – 14 mm of hg systolic pressure and 4 – 13 mm of hg diastolic pressure.

In people who do not regularly drink caffeine, the raise in blood pressure will be sharper.

The reason for the increase in blood pressure is not exactly known. Some experts say that caffeine acts on hormones which keep the blood vessels wide, resulting in the thinning of blood vessels temporarily.

Studies on long term effects of caffeine on blood pressure have shown contradictory results.
