Cholesterol Myths – Egg & Cholesterol Myths
There are many myths about cholesterol prevalent in the society. Some of these are mentioned below:
- Cholesterol is known as the deadly poison. Cholesterol is not a poison but is a vital substance for all living beings especially human beings. There is nothing like good or bad cholesterol in existence. The levels of cholesterol increases or decreases due various factors and these fluctuations are the symptoms of unhealthy body. Cholesterol’s in themselves are not unhealthy.
- High levels of cholesterol are considered to promote atherosclerosis which later transforms into coronary heart disease; but it has been proved in research that even low levels of cholesterol can cause the same disease.
- A normal body produces three to four times the amount of cholesterol that we eat in our diet. It has been proved in studies that the production of cholesterol increases when it is taken in a small amount and decreases when it is taken in large amount in the food.
- There is no evidence which can proof that too much of cholesterol can result in heart attacks.
Egg And Cholesterol Myths:
There was a famous myth that eggs are rich source of cholesterol so they raise the levels of cholesterol in the body and can cause heart attacks. Another myth regarding cholesterol was that it a fat and it responsible for heart diseases and disorders.
The fact for these is that there are usually two types of cholesterols like dietary cholesterol and body cholesterol. Both these cholesterol are important for the body. Dietary cholesterol is the cholesterol which products like eggs, meat, seafood, diary products and other foods carry with them. Body cholesterol is that cholesterol is the one which body prepares for it.
All cholesterols are not bad; some cholesterol is beneficial as they are helpful in maintaining cell walls, producing vitamin D etc. Actually, body cholesterol which is produced by liver is of two types; high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). It is the LDL which is harmful. When the quantity of this cholesterol increases then only heart attack and heart diseases take place.
