What is Bullous Pemphigoid?

Bullous pemphigoid is a condition in which fluid-filled blisters erupt on the skin surface. These blisters usually erupt at the arms, legs and trunk. Bullous pemphigoid can erupt in one area of the body or may spread to other areas too.

Bullous pemphigoid initially may cause redness, irritation, and welts etc. In the course of time, these areas may be affected with fluid filled blisters(bullae). Bullous pemphigoid is very common in older adults of age above 60 years

What Causes Bullous Pemphigoid?
Bullous Pemphigoid is caused when our immune system attacks the body. Immune system, which is responsible for protection against bacteria, viruses etc. However, in some cases it malfunctions and releases antibodies which attack our healthy tissues, organs etc. Hence, this disorder is known as an autoimmune disorder.

What causes the immune system to attack the healthy tissues is not known. However, this condition is mostly seen in old people.

Symptoms of Bullous Pemphigoid:
The symptoms of bullous pemphigoid are redness, itching, irritation, and blisters. The symptoms may mild such as itchy welts or may be severe such as blisters and infection. Bullous Pemphigoid may also cause blisters in the mouth or in the esophagus

Tests for Bullous Pemphigoid:
Your doctor may take a skin biopsy to test if you have bullous pemphigoid. Blood tests can also be taken to check for the presence of antibodies

Bullous Pemphigoid Treatment:
Bullous pemphigoid treatment aims at suppressing the immune system response. Here are the treatments available for bullous pemphigoid:

  • Corticosteroids in pill or cream forms, help in relieving the inflammation
  • Antibiotics such as Tetracycline or minocycline act on the immune system and suppress it
  • Immunosuppressants such as azathioprine help in suppressing the immune system

After the treatment, bullous pemphigoid completely clears up. However, this condition can flare up suddenly. It is important for the patient to completely follow the instructions for complete relief.
