The closer your home is to the road, the more your children are prone to allergies. Kids living in homes closer to a busy street are constantly exposed to dangerous pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide from vehicles. The air pollution in major roads is far higher than in other areas.

Kids when exposed to such polluted air, can develop asthma, hay fever, and eczema. These findings were highlighted in a study by researchers from German Research Center for Environment and Health at the Institute of Epidemiology, which involved nearly 6000 children in Munich.

The Experiment:
The experiment focused on the association between living close to main roads and occurrence of allergies in children. The German research team led by Dr. Joachim Heinrich, studied 2,900, 4-year old children and 3000, 6-year old children living in Munich. The results showed that children close to the main roads were more prone to develop atopic diseases including hay fever, eczema, and asthma.

They also found out that children who lived 165 feet close to the roads had 50% more probability in developing allergies. Children living within 50 feet from the busy street had the highest probability of developing allergies than those living farther away.
This experiment shows the strong association between living near the main roads and allergies in children.

Air pollution and allergies:
The various pollutants from cars, buses, and trucks are higher on busy roads. Carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide are the common pollutants from vehicles and they can be very harmful. Apart from affecting the health these pollutants are also known to cause various allergies.

The air pollution from the busy street affects the children more than the parents. They develop allergies and it is very risky for their health. Hence, it is a better option to stay at a place where fresh air is available, far from the constant pollution.
