Fish oil preserves brain function

5-1-05_FishOil_A.jpgAccording to studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, fish oil has shown to be very effective in preserving the brain function of people who are ageing. Fish oil has high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids in it and its higher percentage in the blood level preserves the thinking ability in elderly.

Earlier researches had proved its ability in protecting people against dementia and Alzheimer’s. This was found to be the effect of two types of omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), in fish oil. But the effect of these fatty acids on the thinking ability or the cognitive function was not given much focus or prominence. The latest study proves fish oil to be very effective in preserving the cognitive functions in the elderly.

In a study conducted for 5 years on 210 healthy men between the age group of 79 to 89, it was found that those who ate fish had a slower decline in cognitive function than those who did not eat fish. The study suggested that the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA in fish oil have anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory properties that help preserve cognitive functions.
