Are artificial sweeteners safe for your child?

eat.JPGThere are two highly contradictory opinions about the safety regarding the consumption of artificial sweeteners. According to one study, artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame, which is one of the most popular artificial sweeteners, is considered to be extremely harmful for your kid’s health if consumed in excess. So it is recommended to not allow your kids to consume foods that contain high levels of aspartame.  The chemical is not safe for the development of brain in children. During pregnancy, the consumption of even trace amounts of aspartame can dramatically increase the risk of children being born with diminished brain function says the report.

But according to another study that contradicts this one, consumption of aspartame is safe for most people. The Food and Drug Administration considers aspartame as safe for use. The other approved sweeteners are, saccharine, acesulfame potassium (acesulfame-K), neotame, and sucralose.

Excess amount of aspartame can of course be harmful. FDA does not recommend more than 50 milligrams of aspartame per kilogram of body weight for adults. Let your child relish the natural sweetness of real and wholesome food rather than making them addicted to artificial sweeteners.
