Is insulin glargine safe?
Insulin glargine, man-made insulin, used by women during pregnancy was considered to cause complications during delivery and other problems like excessive fetal growth. Insulin glargine provides a good glycemic control and reduces the risk of hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetes. But because of its growth promoting effects, concerns were raise on using this insulin. Now, a latest study indicates that the use of this insulin during pregnancy does not create any complications as assumed.
In a report in the British Journal of Obstetric and Gynecology, 20 pregnant women with type1 diabetes a 44 with gestational diabetes were evaluated. Half of them were given standard insulin and the other half was given insulin glargine.
As per the earlier assumption, there had to be a difference in birth weight in babies of mothers who were given insulin glargine. But, the babies born to both these insulin users did not show any significant differences in their birth weight. And as per the reports, there were also no significant differences in health complications in the infants. So now it has been declared that use of insulin glargine during pregnancy is safe.
