Omega 3 during pregnancy

l_fish.jpgOmega 3 plays a very significant role in the development of the fetus. it is a significant component of pregnancy diet. It is important in the development of the brain, the nervous system, formation of retina and overall growth and development. Deficiency of Omega 3 during pregnancy will harm both the mother and the baby. It can cause post partum depression, preterm birth and low birth weight baby.

Omega 3 has to be included in a person’s diet on a regular basis. But during pregnancy, at least 250 mg of omega 3 needs to be consumed every day. It is during the final trimester that the baby’s brain system develops. So omega 3 becomes more essential during this stage of pregnancy.

Omega 3 is found in flaxseed oil, walnut oil, and fish. It is found in oily fishes like mackerel, herring, tuna, sardines and salmon. Omega 3 fish oil supplements are also obtained. Increased amounts of mercury and PCBs can be harmful for the fetus. So be careful not to consume fish with high content of mercury in it. Omega 3 is also found in fruits, vegetables, eggs, dark green vegetables and sunflower oil.

Important information that many women do not realize. A special pregnancy diet should begin as soon as possible after conception. The first 3 months are critical since this is when the baby’s major organs and brain are being developed. Most miscarriages also occur during the first 3 months. Poor nutrition can result in miscarriage, deformity and birth defects.
