Lifestyle and Dietary Changes for Autism

eating child 2.jpgAutism is identified as an autoimmune disorder. Processed foods are considered to be the main culprit in worsening this condition. So avoid consuming processed carbohydrates and sugar that can directly hamper the functioning of the immune system. Feed on fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, and nuts. Have raw fruits and vegetables in the form of salads as much as possible. They provide vitamins, minerals and other vital enzymes that are lacking in an autistic child.

Abnormal protein levels have been detected in the urine of individuals suffering from autism. This proves that their body is not able to break down certain proteins into amino acids. These proteins are identified as gluten and casein. The food items that contain these proteins have to be avoided. Gluten is found in wheat, barley and oats; whereas casein is found in human and cow’s milk.

Research has shown that most autistic individuals are sensitive to dairy products and certain fruits, such as strawberries and citrus fruits, which can affect the immune system.

Cell membranes in the brain of autistic children break down fatty acids at a faster rate than in normal children. So childhood autism is often linked to a deficiency of fatty acids (especially omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids) that are found in oily fishes like mackerel and salmon.
