Tips to Discipline Your Child

parenting.jpgControlling your child’s behavior is one of the most common problems faced by the parents. Discipline plays an important role in your child’s development. Disciplining children involves a lot of patience, care, concern and time on the part of the parent.

  1. Discipline does not just involve rebuking, punishing or threatening your child. Instead, try to discipline your child with positive rewards and praise instead of spanking or threatening.
  2. It takes time for children to learn to control their behavior. They imbibe this skill gradually as they mature. So try to understand your child’s temperament and choose the disciplinary strategy accordingly.
  3. Try to understand your child’s problem and help him/her to work out the problem.
  4. Be a good role model. Do not hit or yell at your child if you do not expect them to act like that.
  5. Avoid too much criticism and too much praise. Too much criticism will make them feel insecure and will give them the feeling that you love them less. Too much praise will make your comments less effective.
  6. Removing privileges could also be a very powerful and effective strategy in disciplining your child.

Discipline helps your child differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. It helps them control their impulses, and respect and understand other’s feelings and needs.
