Obesity Leads to Memory Loss
Those people who are obese, who have higher cholesterol level and higher blood pressure, have more chances of suffering from memory loss and diseases related to it than those who are not.
The hormone leptin secreted by fat cells are responsible for regulating our appetites by sending messages to stop eating. But in people who are overweight, the message does not cross into the brain. Memory and learning is also related to the hormone leptin. So in fat people, the function of this hormone is slowed down thus creating disorders related to memory and cognition.
Another reason could be that clogged arteries caused due to high blood pressure and cholesterol in obese people will reduce the blood flow to the brain. This can increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. A diet that includes lots of vegetables; especially green leafy vegetables will help reduce the damage caused to the brains because of its antioxidant properties that protect against the action of free radicals. Antioxidants not only slow down oxidation, but also act as anti-inflammatory agents and make brain cells less vulnerable to amyloid plaque that causes Alzheimer’s.
Apart from vegetables, fruits like oranges, plums, red grapes, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries, and vitamin B (niacin and folic acid) also helps sharpen the memory.
