First Aid for Insect Bites

insect bite.jpgIf proper care is not taken, insect bites can be fatal. You can identify the sting by puncture marks or blisters. Insect bite or sting can cause redness, swelling, pain and inflammation on the skin. These are some of the general steps to follow for all kinds of insect bites.

  • Insect bite will leave behind a stinger attached to a venom sack. Scrape the stinger from the area where it was stung. Scrape using fingernail. Don’t use tweezers as it will introduce more venom into the sting.
  • Place ice or cloth soaked in cold water to avoid swelling of the stung area. (Do not apply ice for snakebites).
  • Wash the area with soap and water.
  • Give acetaminophen for pain.
  • Avoid scratching the sting.
  • If allergic reactions appear wear a medical ID bracelet or necklace.
  • Put a mixture of water and baking soda and apply several times a day.
  • An antihistamine like benadryl is good if itching persists.
  • Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion.
  • Check the person’s breathing and pulse. If necessary give CPR.

Watch for signs of infection for few days. Visit doctor in case of severe allergic reactions. If there is difficulty in breathing, dizziness, vomiting, massive swelling or fainting, immediately seek medical supervision.
