Tips to be a Better Dad

fatherandson21.bmpEvery father would want to establish a strong and lasting emotional bond with his son/daughter. Here are some practical tips to explore this relationship and mould you into a compassionate father.

  • Try to spend time with your child. Do not be too busy for your child; and do not let them feel that work has more precedence in your life. Go out for movies, for games or sport activities, shopping or for a walk with your child. If possible try to include them in your work and household chores.

Survey and studies have found that well educated men prove to be better fathers. “Those with higher levels of education report higher levels of activity with their children.”

  • Be familiar with your child’s world. Go out with your child ones in a while and try to find out who your child’s friends are, and the activities that he/she is involved in and so on.  Let your questioning not seem an interrogation to your child. Make them feel that you are interested in their activities. Try to find out who are the people who inspire them; and why. Try to find out what aspects of you do they like or dislike.
  • Those who are expecting child and are not married, it is best to be with the mother when the child is born, and in the initial stages of the child’s life. It will be a great support for the child as well as the mother.
  • Punishment has never proved to be effective in disciplining children. It might transform your child in to rebels. Make your child feel that he is given a responsibility. Also give them choices. Work out some of the positive disciplining methods. Try to make your child understand why his/her choice would harm him/her.
  • Respect and support your child’s mother. This gives a feeling of security and protection to your child. It also provides a healthy and safe environment for your child’s development and growth.

Reports have shown that 28 million men in the United States have children less than 19 years of age, and three-quarters of those men live with their children. “As you would suspect, because the father lives with their children, he is more likely to engage in activities with the children. Eighty-one percent play with their kids daily, and 74 percent ate with their kids.”

  • Eat with your family. It is one of the best ways to be together with your family everyday. It is a good time to listen and be listened.
  • Your anger can breed anger in your kids. Try to find out ways to defuse your anger.

These are some of the very simple steps that would make your child claim you as the “world’s best Dad”.
