Red Wine for Heart
Red wine is considered to be highly beneficial for cardiovascular health. The purple skin of grape contains cardioprotective compounds called polyphenolic antioxidants that sustain the cardiovascular health of human beings. In white wine, the skin of the grape is not included in its preparation. Though the white wine does not contain the grape skin, it is still considered good for cardiovascular health. The skin contains high levels of anthocyanins (a polyphenolic antioxidant), which the flesh does not. But the pulp contains other types of polyphenol that has cardio-protective potential. During the fermentation process, the alcohol produced dissolves the polyphenol found in the skin and seeds of grapes. The antioxidants present in wine overcome the free radicals that cause cell damage.
Resveratrol, an antioxidant present in grapes, has the potential to prevent blood clotting in the blood vessels; and also reduces the damage of blood vessels caused by fat deposits. Experiments were conducted on patients with high blood pressure. They were supplemented with grape wine in their diet and this resulted in their lowering of blood pressure. It has also shown to reduce the LDL cholesterol level and increase the HDL cholesterol.
