With indoor plants, you could add splendor to your rooms. Indoor plants are preferred not only for its aesthetic value, but also for its air cleansing properties. It is very well known that plants increase the amount of oxygen in the air and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide. 

If you are planning to grow indoor plants, here are some points to be pondered on:

  • Understand the requirements of the plant - the amount of water and sunlight needed – before selecting a plant.
  • The lighting inside your rooms must be able to meet the light requirements of your plant. One would naturally choose plants that require low to medium lighting. If the interior of your house has very dim lighting, you could provide artificial lighting. But it is always better to keep plants where they can get enough sunlight.
  • The water requirements of plants vary. Do not over-water the plants. See to it that the pots you use have holes at the bottom to drain off excess water.
  • Use attractive pots and containers to add to the beauty of your room.
  • A plant’s growth also depends on the moisture content/ humidity in the air. If the air is dry, spray some water on the leaves.
  • Select plants that are free of pests.
  • The pH level of the soil must be slightly acidic.
  • There are fertilizers for indoor plants available in the market. Plants like orchids need special fertilizers.
  • You can use both flowering and non-flowering plants for your indoor garden. All kinds of plants like shrubs, climbers, bulbs and ferns can be planted indoors. Some of the most common house plants are: African Violets, Bonsai, Cactus, Cyclamens, Creeping Fig, Philodendrons, Clematis, Morning Glory and Nasturtiums.
