How to Stay Safe from Winter Fire?

Fire safety is a common issue during winter season. Here we give you tips to stay safe from winter fire.

  • Make sure the fire is not big. Big fires can heat up the inside of chimney, and it becomes really hot. You can prevent it if the fire is a smaller one.
  • Open the flue. The fire drafts up the chimney. If it is not open, the fire cannot vent out. The smoke vents to the outside of the fireplace in the house.
  • A good, sturdy screen is important to avoid majority of embers from getting on to the carpet.
  • Never leave your child in a room with a fireplace. Don’t put combustible things near a fireplace. Never go to sleep with a fire still burning.
  • Keep the screen up. When disposing of the ashes, scoop them into a metal can and put them away from your house. Make sure the ashes are completely cool before putting them into a Dumpster.
  • Clean the chimney once a year. If you use it once or twice, this may not be necessary.
  • Don’t leave the kitchen when you are cooking. You may put something on the stove and go to bed forgetting it.
  • Grease fires are common. Put a lid on a grease fire. Then, turn the stove off.
  • Space heaters are a common cause of fire. You should not leave them unattended. You should leave at least three feet of open space around it. Never put things that burn too close to them.
  • Smoking is also a major cause of fires. Don’t smoke in bed. Keep matches and lighters away from children. Make sure that the fire in the cigarette is extinguished.
  • Also, never leave a candle unattended. Don’t put burning candles close to something that catches on fire.
