How to Protect Your Eyes from UV Rays?
Does your daily routine demand spending most part of your day under the scorching sun? If yes, then your eyes are under harmful effect of ultra violet (UV) rays emitted from the sun, which can severely hamper your vision. The UV rays are becoming an important contributing factor for eye problems such as retinal degeneration, cataract, and conditions such as pterygium.
Contact lenses with UV protection can save you from these problems. UV protection soft lenses prevent formation of ocular diseases, attenuate UV radiation and reduce probabilities of ocular diseases. They can also reduce the occurrence of sun-related ocular pathologic conditions.
Exposure of your eyes to the sunrays for prolonged duration can cause ocular diseases. This risk is more at places near the equator and those located on higher altitudes. It is due to the higher intensity of UV rays at those places.
UV rays kill outer surface of cells in your eyes. These dead cells decrease the flexibility and transparency of your eyes. This causes formation of a white layer on the surface of lens causing cataract and decreasing the opacity of your eye. Contact lenses with UV protection can prevent cataract formation.
American Optometry Association (AOA) recommends using sunglasses and UV blocking contact lenses to get maximum protection from UV rays. These lenses filter almost 90% of the UV rays. They also cover the entire pupil and prevent sunlight striking your eyes from the sides. The right pair of contact lenses and sunglasses can protect your eyes and vision for years to come.
