Smoking Causes Asthma???

smoking.jpgAll of us know that smoking can cause cancer and respiratory problems. A recent study conducted on more than 2,500 smoking children claims that smoking can increase the risk of asthma to a great extent.

Here are the research findings:

  • Regular adolescent smokers have an increased risk of developing asthma during their teens compared to non-smoking peers.
  • Children who smoked 300 or more cigarettes per year are almost at a four-fold increased risk for asthma compared to nonsmokers.
  • Non-allergic children were at higher risk than those with a history of allergies.
  • The adolescents who were exposed to cigarette smoke when in the womb and later developed smoking habit are at higher risk of asthma. They are at more than an eight-fold increased risk of asthma than the unexposed nonsmokers.
  • Smoking causes increased bronchial hyper-responsiveness in children and adults without asthma.
  • Increased bronchial hyper-responsiveness and the pro-inflammatory milieu in smokers increase the risk of asthma.

This study stressed the need to control the habit of smoking in children, adolescents and women of childbearing age.
