One common cause for hair loss in women could be hormonal imbalances. Thinning of hair can be caused by an overactive or under active thyroid gland. Treating the thyroid disease also helps protect against hair loss. If the female hormones (estrogens) go out of balance , then it can cause hair loss. In this case if this imbalance is corrected then hairloss can be stopped.

Child Birth:

Sometimes child birth can cause sudden hair loss in women. Around three months after the birth of the baby hair loss is common among women. This is a very common one and is also caused due to the hormones. During pregnancy the normal shedding of hair is stopped due to high levels of hormones. Once the hormones return to normal levels, this extra hair sheds with the normal cycle of hair growth and thus seems like you are loosing a lot of hair.

Menopause Hormonal Therapies:

Some other causes are due to hormonal therapies like Progesterone, a female hormone that stunts the formation of a new follicle. Hair loss during menopause is very common and results in thinning hair in elderly women. Around 13 percent of women undergoing menopause experience hair loss.
