Causes of Facial Hair in Women

Your genes determine the amount of hair you have. It is a fact that women from some ethnic groups tend to have more facial hair than the others. Excess hair can also be caused by some medical conditions.

Some medications cause facial hair growth. These include birth control pills, hormones and anabolic steroids. There is another health problem called Hirsutism where women tend to have thick, dark, hair on their faces as well as their chests, abdomens and backs.

This can be caused by a condition where there is an increase in the levels of male hormones in a woman. The symptoms of these conditions are also associated with menstrual irregularities, Polycystic ovary syndrome, Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Androgen-producing tumors of the ovary or adrenal gland and Cushing’s syndrome and so on.

Excess facial hair growth can also be caused if the hair follicles are over sensitive to the male hormones. The diagnosis of this problem is made when a woman suffers from excessive facial hair eventhough she has normal female levels of male hormones without other symptoms like menstrual irregularities.
