First Day at Las Vegas

The aerial view of LAS VEGAS was mind blowing at night, the lights blew off my fuse. I fail to understand how these guys produce so much electric power. The first thing that I felt about America is that these guys want everything BIG, like their heads. The cars are awkwardly BIG called the limos (Limos are like taxis in LAS VEGAS), the buildings are BIG, pays are BIG as well as their EGOS. We took a airport-hotel shuttle which was the cheapest, and a big fat Black lady was driving the bus. LAS Vegas is a city where people don’t stay permanently, people keep coming and going, 40,000 new people come in everyday. So the city is full of hotels & casinos, NO houses. Maybe the people who work in these hotels live there but you cannot get to see a single house in the 20-30 mile radius. Each hotel we passed was a monument in itself, one is named Paris and other New York and they are recreations of how the city looks, amazing. There is also a hotel called Venetian, which is recreation of Venice including the boats and the canals, great place to stay if you are in a romantic relationship with your partner. We arrived at our hotel “The Plaza” which is in downtown area and considered to be a good one with 800 rooms, swimming pool, health club, tennis courts and a huge Casino, rated 3 stars. For $50 a night for a double room I guess it was a steal as i booked well in advance. The check-in was little delayed as we arrived almost by midnight and there were 2 clerks serving us. We were starving and wanted to get a quick lite dinner before we crashed, and were delighted to have McDonalds as part of the hotel in the ground floor. had quick bites at the burgers and went to bed by about 2 in the morning. That was one hectic and amazing day that we had.

Morning was exiting as we got up early (6 am) and had a hot bubble bath relaxed and felt fresh in spite of sleeping for 4 hours, after getting ready got into my new suit with black shirt and golden tie. Could not stop admiring myself and wondered if my wife would skip a beat if she looked at me then. Wanted to call home as I was missing everyone. I wonder sometimes why i feel like being with people i love when I am experiencing new things in life and kind of exited feeling it in me. Family makes you feel complete and whole and all the emotions that you go through have to be a part of it. That is the very reason why immigrants and temporary workers in the United States experience a lack even though they are successful and accomplished in their area of work. They spend huge amounts on international phone calls, have community gatherings and do many other things to fulfill that gap. There is a big business opportunity there and that’s what SMSCountry does “Bridging the Gap” or like Nokia says “connecting people”.

CTIA opened with a huge gathering, about 35,000 international attendees. Everyone dressed smart, some in their business suits and some in their cool casuals but everyone meant business even if the languages were different. The show is so big, 3 days would be too short to cover everything. The idea is to meet only companies that interest you and could be possible partners or associates. We had some basic problems to be taken care of first, our phones and notebooks were out of charge and the electric plugs were not compatible with existing ones there so needed some adapters. we found a stall in the first hour who supplied just that. since we were not connected to the internet since we left (2 and a half days) we badly wanted to access email, so spent 1 hour doing that with the free Wi-Fi internet offered at the show, the hotel was charging extra for the internet access. we also had to find a pre-paid sim card to stay connected, made enquires but could not find single offereing at the show. as it turns out only couple of shops in the whole of Vegas offers this. No one in Vegas buys phone connections everyone comes into Vegas with one, all they want there is fun and entertainment and business happens along the way. That’s Vegas for you.
